Location: 7 Miles south of Holly Springs off Mississippi Highway 7
On June 25, 1935, a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) company occupied the site of Wall Doxey State Park near the town of Holly Springs to begin park development. The land for the park site was conveyed to the State of Mississippi by the Marshall County Board of Supervisors which also specified that the park be named Spring Lake State Park. The park was opened to the public in 1938 and its name was changed in 1956 to honor Mississippi legislator, Wall Doxey State Park.
Much history and especially history of the Civil War is associated with the area of Holly Springs, Mississippi where Wall Doxey State Park is located. The park’s location on Spring Lake is in the area where the Union troops once bivouacked while the nearby town of Holly Springs served as headquarters for the Union Army. The many fine antebellum homes in the area are proud reminders of a culture and lifestyle ended by the Civil War. Wall Doxey’s most popular special events for park guests are the annual Easter, Disc Golf Tournaments, and Halloween.
Consisting of 809.51 total acres (749.51 acres of land and 60 acres of water), Wall Doxey State Park is known throughout Mississippi and Southern Tennessee for its quiet atmosphere, its wildlife, wildflowers, vibrant fall colors, and the trophy-sized large mouth bass in Spring Lake. Named for the cold, bubbling springs which feed it, 45 acre Spring Lake offers boat rentals. Additional day-use facilities at Wall Doxey State Park include 2 timber form playgrounds, 40 picnic sites, 4 large picnic pavilions, a multipurpose sports field, 2 twenty hole disc courses, and a 2.5 mile nature trail spanning the perimeter of the lake.
Accommodations for guests include 9 guest cabins which are fully furnished and equipped for light housekeeping. Bed and bath lines are provided along with cooking and eating utensils. There are 64 camping pads with water and electricity in Wall Doxey’s heavily forested campground and each site has a grill, picnic table, and fire ring. A central dump station is provided along with laundry facilities and bathhouse. The park also has a designated tent camping area. Scout troops (only) may also camp along a loop of the park’s nature trail. The group camp houses 104 in 8 centrally heated and air conditioned cabins sleeping 13 persons each. These cabins also contain shower and bathroom and a separated counselor’s room. The group camp cafeteria serves 120. A meeting room for groups is available as part of the group complex.
Wall Doxey’s Visitors Center is a spacious sandstone structure overlooking Spring Lake and built by the CCC. It houses the park office, 2 large bathrooms, snack machines, and in the lobby, an interpretive display of insects, aquatic life, wildflowers, and leaves found in the park.
